Fall outdoors
Color is running late this year: on October 15, Maryland's state foresters said the Baltimore area was not yet near peak, so the last two weeks of October should still be a good time to go.
- Rocks State Park, Jarrettsville area. Hike to the King and Queen Seat overlook or Kilgore Falls, or drive scenic Route 136 through the park.
- Susquehanna State Park, Havre de Grace. River views, wooded trails and the historic grist mill. The Deer Creek Trail passes a 95-foot white oak and a 97-foot beech.
- Ma & Pa Trail, Bel Air. An easy paved-and-gravel walk through woods and meadow. Great with a stroller or a dog.
- Gunpowder Falls State Park. Old hickories, beeches and black walnuts, plus some of the region's best trout fishing.
- Oregon Ridge, Cockeysville. Wooded trails and a nature center, with Tricks and Treats on the Ridge on Oct 30.
- Havre de Grace Promenade. A waterfront boardwalk where the Susquehanna meets the Bay. Go at sunset, then grab dinner on Water Street.

The housing market
Harford County bucked the statewide slowdown in September 2026: sales rose 9% while Maryland's fell 8%, but homes are taking longer to sell and buyers have more choices.

Baltimore County and Maryland
- Baltimore County: sales fell 7.8% from last September. Single-family homes that did sell went for a median of $410,000, in a median of 13 days, at about 103% of list price.
- Maryland: the median price rose 0.5% to $432,000. Homes for sale rose 21%, contracts fell 17%, and supply grew from 2.8 to 3.5 months.
What it means for you
If you're buying: you have more homes to choose from than a year ago and a little more time to decide. Homes that have been sitting may leave room to negotiate on price or closing costs.
If you're selling: buyers are still active in Harford, but they're comparing more options. Pricing right from day one and having the home show well matter more now than they did last fall.
Fall home checklist
An afternoon of prep now heads off the most common winter repairs in a Maryland home.
- Clean the gutters once most leaves have dropped
- Book a furnace or heat pump tune-up and change the filter
- Disconnect hoses and drain outdoor faucets before freezing nights
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries
- Re-caulk and weatherstrip drafty windows and doors
- Look for missing shingles or loose flashing on the roof
- Have the chimney swept and inspected if you burn wood
- Stock up on ice melt and check the snow shovel
Thinking of selling in the spring? These are the same items a buyer's inspector looks at first, so doing them now pays twice.
